BECOMING EVE

One woman’s triumphant quest for radical self-reinvention.

Becoming Eve is a hard-funny dark comedy, inspired by the memoir by Abby Chava Stein, a trans-feminine Rabbi and LGBTQ advocate who was raised presenting male, and the first born "son" to the holiest family within the ultra-orthodox Chasidic community in Brooklyn. 

We tell her story over two timelines: the first, ‘BEFORE’, follows Abby’s gender-confused upbringing in her historic community. We see her fight to be heard, to outsmart all of her teachers, and always to have the quickest wit, while grappling with her true gender identity. 

In the second timeline, ‘AFTER’, we find Abby following her liberating journey away from her faith and the entire world she knew, having created a new life for herself in Manhattan as a renowned author, a fierce advocate for LGBTQA rights, and an instagram sensation surrounded by a colorful and boisterous circle of new friends and lovers.

This is a celebration of two worlds that couldn’t possibly be more different, but which are just a subway ride away.

Abby Chava Stein was raised in a Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn, isolated in a culture that lives according to the laws and practices of eighteenth-century Eastern Europe, speaking only Yiddish and Hebrew and shunning modern life. Stein was born as the first son in a dynastic rabbinical family, poised to become a leader of the next generation of Hasidic Jews. But Abby felt certain at a young age that she was a girl. Becoming Eve poses the enduring question: How far will you go to become the person you were meant to be?

Evan Dunsky is the co-creator of Showtime’s NURSE JACKIE. He most recently show-ran the Amazon pilot SEA OAK alongside creator George Saunders, with whom he is currently partnered on several projects. He also adapted CONFESSIONS OF A TAX COLLECTOR with Legendary TV for The Paramount Network and wrote on RECTIFY for The Sundance Channel, BANSHEE for Cinemax and HEMLOCK GROVE for Netflix.
